Heartworm Testing
Heartworm disease is a serious and potentially fatal condition caused by a parasitic worm (Dirofilaria immitis) that lives in the heart, lungs, and blood vessels of infected animals, most commonly dogs, but also cats.
Heartworms are transmitted through the bite of an infected mosquito. When a mosquito bites an infected animal, it picks up microscopic baby worms (microfilariae). These develop inside the mosquito and are passed to another animal through a future bite.
Annual testing is recommended, even if your pet is on prevention year-round.
- A simple blood test detects heartworm proteins (antigens).
- Testing is usually done yearly during routine wellness exams.
Heartworm disease is much easier — and safer — to prevent than to treat.
- Monthly chewable tablets
- Topical (spot-on) medications
- Injectable prevention (lasting up to 12 months)
